UROJO

Have you ever heard this word “Urojo” if not, keep on reading you will find out what it means. Urojo is favorite delicious among the Zanzibar’s. It is a kind of food whereby people like it as a main food. Urojo is a mixture of potatoes, barbeques, ‘badia’ and ‘kachori’, cassava crips which is thin and long plus salad. Some people add pepper and ‘embe’ or ‘ukwaju’ to make it have more flavors. In the mixture there is also porridge like liquid which made from wheat flour and it is also mixed with water and ginger. When all is put together in a nice mixture it makes the famous ‘Urojo’, which you should try when you visit our beautiful Island of Zanzibar.

Another thing there is no special time of eating Urojo, but most of the people like to have it in the morning or at night. Myself, I like to have it in the afternoon or at night. The famous joints to have Urojo are like Kijiko, Adnan and many. I hope you will like it when one day you have a taste of it, a bowl is never enough!

EXPERIENCE EID IN ZANZIBAR

After the month of Ramadhan where by all people in the world were fasting, joined together to celebrate the big day of Eid el fitri which is special for people to share with the less fortunate in the society.

In Zanzibar like in the other countries people celebrates together but there is something so special and unique in Zanzibar. It starts with the preparation of Eid from the first day of Ramadhan like buying clothes, new furniture and some of them start to paint their houses. Eid day is like the new day to us, even the children start to save their own money from the small pocket money given by their parents just for that special day.

When the day came there were special dishes served in homes like you couldn’t miss the most favorites in our culture, cakes, and some cookies where in plenty. The main purpose of the day is not to eat but to show unity and equality to all people, and also visit each other to say hello to their relative and friends. In the evening it was a day out for the young and the old, whereby people visited special places like Forodhani and Mnazi mmoja (the big place of Eid day in Zanzibar) where by people went there to celebrate Eid and have fun like dancing ,eating buying some toys to their children etc..

There are four days of Eid in Zanzibar, so you are almost welcome to join Eid in Zanzibar next year don’t miss come see and experience the Zanzibar culture.
